Munnar and Alleppey in One Trip: The Perfect 4-Day Kerala Itinerary

Article Summary

Hills first, backwaters last - the classic Munnar + Alleppey route planned day by day, with real timings, costs and honest advice from a local operator.

Ask ten travellers for the perfect Kerala itinerary and nine will describe the same shape: cool hills first, warm backwaters last. There is a reason the Munnar + Alleppey combination has become Kerala's classic route - it packs two completely different worlds into one trip, and the two sit just a five hour drive apart.

Here is exactly how to plan it, day by day, with real timings and honest advice from a team that arranges this trip hundreds of times a year.

Why Munnar and Alleppey Belong Together

Munnar is a hill station at around 1,600 metres - tea estates rolling to the horizon, misty mornings, sweater weather even in summer. Alleppey is sea-level backwater country - slow canals, paddy fields, and the houseboats Kerala is famous for.

One trip gives you both: mountain air and mirror-calm water, trekking shoes and bare feet on a sundeck. And because Kochi airport sits roughly between them, the route forms a natural triangle with no backtracking.

The golden rule: do Munnar first, Alleppey last. Munnar days are active - viewpoints, tea museum visits, winding drives. The houseboat is the opposite: once you board, your only job is to relax. Ending with the houseboat means you go home rested, not exhausted.

The Classic 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kochi to Munnar (130 km, about 4 hours)

Land at Kochi, meet your cab, and climb into the hills. The drive itself is part of the experience - stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, and watch the vegetation change from coconut palms to spice plantations to tea.

Check in at your Munnar hotel by mid-afternoon, then spend the evening at the local market or simply watching mist roll over the valley.

Day 2: Munnar's Big Sights

Start early for Eravikulam National Park (home of the Nilgiri tahr), then the Tea Museum to see how those endless green bushes become your morning cup. After lunch, Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point make an easy loop. If you have the energy, the sunset from Top Station is worth the extra drive.

Day 3: Down to the Backwaters (170 km, about 5 hours)

One last misty morning in the tea gardens, then the descent to Alleppey. Leave by 8 AM to make your houseboat check-in comfortably - boarding is typically between 12 PM and 1:30 PM.

Then the trip changes gear entirely. Lunch is served as you cruise past paddy fields and village life. The boat anchors before sunset in a quiet stretch of backwater. Dinner on deck, an AC bedroom, and the quietest night of sleep you have had in years.

Day 4: Backwater Sunrise and Home

Wake to mist on the water and breakfast on board. The boat cruises back to the jetty for a 9 AM checkout, and your cab drops you at Kochi airport by early afternoon.

What It Costs

A private 2 nights / 3 days version of this trip (one Munnar hotel night + one houseboat night) starts from around โ‚น15,000 to โ‚น20,000 per couple depending on hotel category, houseboat category and season - cab, stays and houseboat meals included. Longer versions add Thekkady's spice country or extra Munnar days.

We keep live pricing for every variant on our Munnar + Alleppey packages page, and you can compare houseboat categories on our houseboat price guide.

Common Questions

Can I do it in 3 days? Yes - that is the most popular version. One night Munnar, one night houseboat. Four or five days lets you add Thekkady or slow down.

Is there a houseboat in Munnar? No - Munnar is a mountain town. Houseboats operate only on the backwaters, which is exactly why the two destinations pair so well.

What is the best season? October to March is peak: cool in Munnar, dry in Alleppey. June to September (monsoon) is the budget window and the hills are at their greenest, but expect rain.

Munnar to Alleppey - how long really? Around 170 km, but they are hill and country roads. Plan on 5 hours with a breakfast stop, and do not schedule a same-day houseboat check-in later than 1:30 PM.
