Our Story

A house that floats, on water we grew up on.

Alleppey Green Tourism began in 2010 with a stubborn idea - that a night on the Kerala backwaters should feel like being hosted by a family, not processed by an agency. This is the long version of how a handful of boats on Vembanad Lake became one of Alappuzha's most trusted names on the water.

The place that made us: Alappuzha

Alappuzha - the town the world still calls Alleppey - sits on a thin ribbon of land between the Arabian Sea and a vast web of lagoons, lakes and canals. A nineteenth-century traveller nicknamed it “the Venice of the East,” and the name stuck for a reason. Life here has always moved by water. Rice was ferried by water, coir was traded by water, weddings and funerals crossed the water. To grow up in these villages is to learn the moods of the backwaters the way other children learn the streets of a city.

South and east of the town lies Kuttanad, one of the very few places on earth where farmers grow rice below sea level, in fields diked off from the lakes. At the centre of it all is Vembanad - Kerala's largest lake and a Ramsar-listed wetland - whose still, green water is the stage for almost everything we do. When people picture a Kerala houseboat gliding past paddy fields at golden hour, they are picturing home for us.

We did not arrive here as a tourism brand looking for a pretty backdrop. We are from these canals. That single fact shapes every decision we make.

“We didn't want to sell trips. We wanted to hand travellers the version of Alleppey we'd keep for our own families.”

The founding idea, 2010

Why we started: bringing trust back to the water

By the late 2000s the houseboat business had a problem it did not like to talk about. Demand was booming, and so were the shortcuts. Travellers booked online and arrived to find a boat that looked nothing like the photos. Prices were quoted through three or four layers of middlemen, each adding a commission, none adding value. Maintenance and hygiene were wildly uneven from one operator to the next. Families paid premium money and crossed their fingers.

The people who suffered least in that arrangement were the boat owners and crew who actually did the work - the captains, cooks and helpers who kept the vessels running and often saw the smallest share of what guests paid. We knew many of them by name. Alleppey Green Tourism was built to fix both ends of that broken chain at once: an honest promise to the traveller, and a fair deal for the local families who make the experience real.

The promise was deliberately simple - what you see is what you get. Verified boats. Transparent, all-in pricing. Standards of cleanliness and safety we would be comfortable putting our own parents on. It is not a complicated idea. It was just rare.

Traditional Kerala kettuvallam houseboat on the Alleppey backwaters

From kettuvallam to floating villa

The Kerala houseboat is not a gimmick invented for tourists. It is the kettuvallam - literally “boat tied with knots” - a cargo vessel once used to move rice and spices through the backwaters, its hull built from jackwood planks stitched together with coir rope and sealed with cashew-nut resin, roofed in bamboo and palm leaf. Not a single nail. When road and rail took over the freight, these grand old boats might have vanished. Instead they were reborn as the slow-travel icon of Kerala.

Our fleet honours that lineage while meeting the expectations of a modern traveller. Boats range from intimate one-bedroom vessels built for couples to five-bedroom houseboats for families and groups, across three clearly defined tiers - Deluxe, Premium and Luxury - that differ honestly in interiors, air-conditioned hours, menus and finish. We publish what each tier actually includes, so nobody books a dream and boards a compromise.

The “Green” is not decoration

There is a word in the middle of our name, and we take it literally. Vembanad is a living wetland under real pressure - from silting, from plastic, from the sheer weight of boats that use it. A tourism industry that poisons the water it sells is eating its own future. So responsible operation, for us, is not a marketing badge; it is basic self-preservation for the place our children will inherit.

In practice that means favouring cleaner, better-maintained vessels, cutting single-use plastic on board, being careful about where and how waste is handled, and keeping to the backwater regulations and cruising hours that give the lake room to breathe. It means buying the day's fish, rice and vegetables from Kuttanad markets and cooking them on board, so the money a traveller spends actually circulates through the villages they came to see.

Sustainable travel is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about making sure the people who live here are better off for your visit, and the water is no worse. That is the bar we hold ourselves to.

The people who make it real

A houseboat is only as good as the three or four people who run it. Your captain reads the lake the way you read a map, knowing which narrow canal opens onto a heron-filled lagoon and which village temple will be lit up after dark. Your cook turns that morning's catch into a Kerala meal on a two-burner galley that would humble most restaurant kitchens. The crew rig the boat, tend the engine and quietly make sure a family with small children feels safe the whole way.

These are not faceless staff. They are our neighbours - people from the same villages, working close to home, paid fairly and treated as the heart of the business rather than its cheapest line item. When we say we are locals and not just booking agents, we mean that the person steering your boat could well have grown up three canals from the person who answered your first message.

Every way to meet the backwaters

Overnight houseboat cruises

The classic - board around noon, drift through the afternoon, moor among the paddy fields for a night under an enormous sky, and wake to mist on the water.

Day cruises

For travellers short on time - a few unhurried hours on the lake with lunch aboard, no overnight stay required.

Couples & honeymoon boats

Intimate one-bedroom vessels and quiet moorings for the trips that matter most.

Family & group houseboats

Two-to-five-bedroom boats where three generations can travel together without anyone feeling cramped.

Corporate & group charters

Offsites, celebrations and incentive trips run with the logistics handled and the standards guaranteed.

Kerala tour packages

Backwaters paired with the hills - Munnar and Alleppey together - for travellers who want the whole state, not just the lake.

Where we are today - and where the water leads

More than a decade on, Alleppey Green Tourism has grown from a few trusted boats into a full backwater booking platform - one where a traveller anywhere in the world can see real photographs, real prices and real availability, then talk to an actual human in Alappuzha who knows every vessel on the list. We connect guests directly with verified owners, fairly and transparently, and we stand behind every trip we send out.

The ambition from here is not to become the biggest name on the lake. It is to remain the one people trust - the operator a family recommends to another family, year after year, because the boat looked like the photos, the crew felt like friends, and the backwaters were left exactly as beautiful as they were found.
