Parents ask us the same question before almost every family booking: is a houseboat in Alleppey safe with children?
The honest answer is yes, for most families, provided you know how the day works and follow a few rules. This guide covers what actually happens on the water, so you can decide with facts rather than worry.
How a houseboat day works (and why it matters for safety)
Cruising on the Alleppey backwaters is regulated. Under the rules that apply to our boats, cruising is permitted between 12:00 PM and 5:30 PM. After 5:30 PM the boat is anchored at a designated safe spot, and night-time cruising is not allowed.
That has three practical benefits for families:
- The boat is stationary overnight, so children sleep on a still boat rather than a moving one.
- The busiest part of the trip, when the boat is moving, happens in daylight.
- You are never on the water in the dark with a moving engine.
Check-in is between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM. Arriving on time matters, because late arrival does not extend the cruising window.
Life jackets
Safety equipment on board includes life jackets, a first aid kit and fire extinguishers. Under our rules, guests wear life jackets while on the deck during cruising.
For children, the useful thing to do is tell the crew at check-in that you have small children. Ask to see the life jackets, and check that the size suits your child before the boat leaves the jetty.
Swimming: the rule to know before you go
Swimming in the backwaters is not permitted. Entering the water is at the guest's own risk and can end the trip. It surprises some families, especially on a hot afternoon, but the reasons are practical: boat traffic, weeds, depth changes and no lifeguards.
If your children want water time, plan it for the hotel pool before or after your night on the boat.
Supervising young children
Children under 5 must be supervised at all times, and parents or guardians are responsible for them. A few habits make this easy:
- Keep small children away from railings, and do not let anyone lean over them.
- Stay seated during docking and departure, when the boat moves most.
- The engine room and other crew areas are off limits.
- Keep an adult within arm's reach on the deck.
The open deck is a lovely place to sit, but a toddler needs a hand held there.
Weather and monsoon travel
Cruising may be paused or cancelled in heavy rain or strong winds, and this is decided by the captain. If that happens on your trip, refunds follow our Adverse Weather Policy, and you can read the details on our regulations page.
If you are travelling with children in the monsoon, the sensible approach is to keep the plan flexible and confirm the forecast a couple of days before. You can also read our best time to visit guide.
Food and health for kids
- Meals are cooked fresh on board, and a special meal (a plainer dish for a fussy child, for instance) can be arranged if you tell us in advance.
- Carry any regular medicines, rehydration salts and mosquito repellent. Evenings on the water attract mosquitoes.
- Carry a water bottle for the journey to the jetty.
Who should think twice
- Families with a toddler who runs everywhere. It is still doable, but you will want a second adult watching at all times.
- Travellers with mobility difficulties, because boarding a boat from the jetty involves steps and uneven footing.
If either applies, call us before booking and we will suggest a boat and timing that suit you.
What it costs
Children up to 5 years stay free. Beyond that, a boat sized to your group is usually the best value, and you can see current rates in our houseboat price list and the independent Alleppey Houseboat Price Index. Our cancellation policy is published in full before you pay.
A short checklist for parents
- Tell the crew about your children on arrival, and ask for life jackets that fit.
- Keep under-5s supervised on the deck.
- Do not plan swimming in the backwaters.
- Pack medicines, repellent, a light jacket for the evening and snacks for the ride.
- Keep the trip flexible if you are travelling in heavy rain.

Do kids need life jackets on a houseboat? Guests wear life jackets on the deck while the boat is cruising. Ask the crew to check the fit for children.
