1. The "Old Photo" Bait & Switch 📸
This is the oldest trick in the book. A broker sends you photos of a stunning, glass-covered, premium boat. You pay the advance.
When you arrive at the jetty, that boat is nowhere to be found. "Sir, that boat is facing engine trouble," the agent says. "But don't worry, we have upgraded you to an even better boat."
The "better boat" is usually an old, dark, damp vessel that they couldn't sell to anyone else. By then, you are tired, you have luggage, and you have no choice but to board.
How to avoid it:
- Ask for a video call from the boat.
- Ask for the Boat Name and License Number before booking.
- Book with reputed agencies who own their fleets or have exclusive contracts.
2. The "Hidden AC" Clause ❄️
You booked an "AC Houseboat". Great! But wait...
On many budget boats, the AC isn't connected to the main generator. It runs on a small battery or shore power. The captain will tell you: “AC is only from 9 PM to 6 AM.”
Sit inside a closed room in Kerala's humidity at 2 PM without AC? It’s an oven.

4. The "Cruising Time" Cut ⏳
A standard houseboat cruise should be:
- Check-in: 12:00 PM
- Cruising: Until 5:30 PM (with a lunch break)
- Morning Cruise: 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM
Scam boats will check you in late (1:00 PM), serve a long lunch (1 to 3 PM), park early (4:30 PM), and claim "Technical Issue". You end up sitting in a parked boat for 18 hours.
5. The "Shared Food" Shortcut 🍛
In a private houseboat, the food should be cooked fresh on your boat, exclusively for you. Some budget operators cook food in a central "mass kitchen" on land, pack it in plastic containers, and send it to the boat. It’s cold, limited in quantity, and definitely not the "Fresh Catch" experience you paid for.

Government rules mandate:
