Most Alleppey houseboat advice online is vague on the only things that actually matter: what it costs, what time you board, how much you pay upfront, and what happens to your money if you cancel.

The short answer
To book an Alleppey houseboat: choose your cruise type (overnight, day cruise or night stay), choose a category (Deluxe, Premium or Luxury), confirm the boat with a 25% advance, and pay the balance on arrival before boarding. Overnight check-in is 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM and check-out is 9:00 AM the next morning.
Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for December and January. Two weeks is usually enough from June to September.

Step 1: Pick the right cruise type
This single choice changes your price more than anything else, and most first-time visitors get it wrong by defaulting to whatever a search result shows first.
Overnight cruise (what most people want)
You board at midday, cruise through the afternoon, the boat anchors for the night, and you disembark at 9:00 AM. Lunch, evening snacks, dinner and breakfast are included.
This is about 21 hours on the water and it is the only option that includes the two best parts of the backwaters: sunset from the deck and the mist on the water at dawn. If you can only do one thing in Alleppey, do this.
Day cruise (when time is short)
A daytime cruise with lunch on board, typically running late morning to evening. You see the same backwaters and eat the same food, but you skip the evening and morning hours.
Worth booking if you are passing through Alleppey on a tight Kerala itinerary. Not worth booking if you have a free evening, because the overnight costs more but delivers far more than double the experience.
Night stay (stationary)
You board in the evening and the boat stays anchored. It is the cheapest way to sleep on a houseboat, and the right answer only if your arrival is genuinely late. There is no real cruising, so treat it as accommodation rather than as a backwater tour.

Step 2: Understand what the categories really mean
Deluxe, Premium and Luxury are not marketing words in Alleppey. They map to specific, checkable differences, and one of them catches people out every single season.
Deluxe
The entry level. Bedrooms are air conditioned, but on most Deluxe boats the AC runs only from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, while the boat is anchored and the generator is on shore power. Living and dining areas are open-air.
That is fine in December. In April, sitting in a closed cabin at 2:00 PM without AC is genuinely unpleasant. This is the single most common mismatch between what a guest expected and what they booked.
Premium
The category most couples and families should be looking at. Full-time air conditioning in the bedrooms, usually with glass-enclosed living areas so the afternoon is comfortable, better furnishings, and a wider menu.
Luxury
Larger boats with expansive upper decks, full-glass facades, premium interiors, a dedicated chef and an upgraded menu. Worth it for honeymoons and milestone trips, hard to justify otherwise.
The one question to ask before you pay: "Is the air conditioning available during the day, or only at night?" Any honest operator answers that in one sentence.
Step 3: Size the boat correctly
Houseboats are priced per boat, not per person, so bedroom count is the main lever on cost.
- 1 bedroom: couples, or a couple with one small child
- 2 bedrooms: two couples, or a family of four to six
- 3 or more bedrooms: extended families and groups
Two things people miss:
Extra guests beyond the base occupancy are charged separately. A 1-bedroom boat is usually priced for two people. A third adult is an add-on, not free.
Children below 5 years are exempt from booking charges unless stated otherwise, so do not let anyone quote you a per-head price for a toddler.

Step 4: Know what it should cost
Indicative overnight rates for a 1-bedroom private houseboat in 2026:
- Deluxe: ₹7,000 to ₹9,000 per night
- Premium: ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 per night
- Luxury: ₹18,000 to ₹25,000+ per night
Four things move these numbers:
- Season. December and January are the peak, and rates rise accordingly. June to September is the lowest.
- Weekends and holidays. Friday and Saturday nights cost more than a Tuesday, often meaningfully so.
- Bedrooms. Each additional bedroom adds to the base rate.
- Category. As above, and this is the biggest single factor.

A note on suspiciously low quotes. If someone offers you a "luxury" boat well under these ranges in peak season, the money has to come from somewhere: an older boat than the photos show, a shorter cruise, or food quality. Price in Alleppey is fairly efficient. Deep discounts almost always have a mechanism behind them, and it is worth asking what it is.
Step 5: Book at the right time
Lead times that actually work:
- December and January: 4 to 8 weeks ahead. Christmas and New Year sell out first and are the hardest dates in the year to fill late.
- October, November, February, March: 2 to 4 weeks.
- April and May: 1 to 2 weeks. Hot, so prioritise a Premium boat with daytime AC.
- June to September: 1 to 2 weeks. Fewest crowds, greenest backwaters, best rates.
Same-day houseboat bookings are typically not accepted unless specifically confirmed, because the boat has to be provisioned and crewed. Do not arrive in Alleppey planning to sort it out at the jetty.

Step 6: Verify the operator before you pay
This is where trips go wrong. Before you send an advance, get all six of these:
- The boat's name. A real booking is for a named boat, not "a deluxe houseboat".
- Photos or video of that specific boat, ideally recent. Ask for a video call from the boat if you have any doubt.
- Written confirmation of the AC schedule, day and night.
- The exact check-in and check-out times in writing.
- What is included, itemised, especially meals.
- The cancellation policy, in numbers, before payment rather than after.
Two warning signs worth taking seriously: an operator who will not name the boat, and pressure to pay the full amount immediately in cash. Neither is normal.
Also be careful with brokers at the jetty. Freelance agents who approach you on arrival typically take a large commission out of a fixed boat price, which means the operator has less left to spend on your food, fuel and crew. You pay a premium rate for a budget experience. Booking direct with the operator removes that layer entirely.
The other tactic worth knowing is the swap: you are shown photos of one boat, and on arrival you are told it has "engine trouble" and moved to another. Confirming the boat by name in writing, and asking for recent photos of that named boat, is what makes this hard to pull off.

Step 7: Understand the payment terms
Our terms, which are a reasonable benchmark for any legitimate operator:
- A booking is confirmed only on receipt of a minimum 25% advance payment.
- The balance is settled on arrival, before boarding.
- Keep your proof of payment. It is what you fall back on if anything is disputed.
- Bookings are first-come, first-served and subject to availability, so an unpaid enquiry holds nothing.
If you are asked for 100% upfront by a party you cannot verify, that is a reason to slow down, not to hurry.
Step 8: Read the cancellation policy before you pay, not after
This is the part almost nobody checks, and it is the part that costs real money. Our cancellation policy is published in full. The core numbers:
- 30 days or more before your date: full refund of the advance
- 15 to 30 days before: 50% of the advance refunded
- Less than 15 days before: no refund
Peak season is different, and this matters. For December and January, long weekends, public holidays, festive seasons and government-declared holidays, cancellations are entirely non-refundable at any stage, with no rescheduling or credit transfer. Capacity is fixed and those dates cannot be resold late.
Rescheduling, which is often the better option:
- 7 or more days before: free of charge, subject to availability
- Within 7 days: a fee of 50% of the booking amount
- Maximum of two reschedules per booking, and a rescheduled booking cannot then be cancelled for a refund
No-shows are not eligible for refunds, rescheduling or credit. That includes arriving after check-in hours without telling anyone, so if your train is running late, call ahead. It is a two-minute call that protects the whole booking.
If we cancel because conditions are unsafe (storms, flooding, official bans), you get a full refund or a complimentary reschedule, your choice.
Be honest with yourself about how firm your dates are before you book a non-refundable peak-season night.
Step 9: Confirm what is included
Normally included on an overnight cruise:
- The boat, exclusively for your group, with crew and captain
- Lunch, evening tea with snacks, dinner and next-morning breakfast
- A welcome drink on boarding
- Air conditioning per your category's schedule
- Fuel and the standard cruise route
Normally not included, and worth confirming rather than assuming:
- Alcohol, which on most boats you may bring aboard yourself
- Premium seafood such as tiger prawns, crab or lobster, usually available on request at extra cost and best arranged early in the day
- Add-on activities such as kayaking or a shikara ride
- Transport to and from the jetty
- Crew tips, which are discretionary
Water activities in Alleppey, including kayaking, shikara and speedboat rides, operate between 6:00 AM and 5:30 PM, so plan those around your cruise rather than during it.
Step 10: Get the arrival day right
Board between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM. Aim for the earlier end: check-in later and you lose cruising time from the best part of the afternoon, and you cannot claim it back at the other end because check-out is fixed at 9:00 AM.
Carry with you:
- A government photo ID for every adult, which is mandatory
- Your booking confirmation and payment proof
- Mosquito repellent, which is genuinely useful at dusk
- Sunscreen, a hat and light cotton clothing
- A power bank, since sockets on board can be limited
- Any medication you need, because you will not be near a pharmacy
If you are arriving by train, Alappuzha station is close to the main jetty areas. Build in a buffer, because a delayed train is the most common cause of a missed check-in window.

The three mistakes that cost the most
Booking on price alone. The cheapest boat on your dates is cheapest for a reason, and in Alleppey the reason is usually the boat's age, the AC schedule or the food. Pick the category first, then compare prices within it.
Skipping the cancellation terms on peak dates. A December booking made on uncertain dates is a real financial risk, because it is non-refundable. If your plans might move, either wait until they firm up or reschedule early while it is still free.
Booking through a chain of intermediaries. Every layer between you and the boat takes a margin out of a fixed price, and the cuts land on your experience. Book direct where you can.
