Article Summary

Wondering what you actually do on a houseboat? Get the complete hour-by-hour itinerary for a 1-night Alleppey backwater cruise, from check-in to check-out.

You have booked your flight to Kochi, your bags are packed, and you are ready to experience the world-famous Kerala backwaters. But what actually happens once you step onto the boat?

If you are planning a 1 Night / 2 Days Houseboat Cruise (the most popular choice for travelers), you might be wondering how your time will be spent.

At Alleppey Green Tourism, we have perfected the backwater itinerary to ensure you experience the best views, the most delicious food, and the deepest relaxation possible. Here is exactly what your 24 hours on the water will look like.

Day 1: 12:00 PM - Welcome Aboard!

Your journey begins at the Alleppey Finishing Point (or your designated docking area). As you step onto your private houseboat, your crew—a Captain, Oarsman, and Private Chef—will welcome you with a refreshing tender coconut or fresh fruit juice.

After a quick briefing on the boat's amenities and safety features, the engines start, and you leave the bustling town behind, entering the serene, palm-fringed canals of the backwaters.

Day 1: 1:30 PM - The Kerala Sadya (Lunch)

About an hour into the cruise, the captain will dock the boat in a quiet, scenic spot. It’s time for lunch.

Your private chef will serve a traditional, multi-course Kerala Sadya on a banana leaf.

  • The Highlight: The world-famous Karimeen Pollichathu (Pearl Spot fish marinated in spices and grilled in banana leaves).
  • Vegetarian Options: A lavish spread of Avial, Thoran, Sambar, Pachadi, and Payasam (dessert). (Note: At Alleppey Green Tourism, we customize the spice level to your exact preference!)

Day 1: 3:00 PM - Deep Backwater Cruising

With a full stomach, head to the upper deck or the front viewing lounge. This is the core of the backwater experience.

The captain will navigate through the narrower canals, passing endless paddy fields (some of the only farms in the world located below sea level!). You will see local village life up close: fishermen casting their nets, children waving from the banks, and tiny wooden canoes ferrying goods.

This is the time to take out your camera or simply put your phone away and absorb the profound tranquility.

Day 1: 4:30 PM - Tea and Sunset Views

As the golden hour approaches, the chef will serve hot Kerala tea (or coffee) alongside traditional evening snacks like Pazham Pori (banana fritters) or Onion Pakodas.

The backwater sunsets are legendary. The sky turns brilliant shades of orange and purple, reflecting perfectly off the calm waters.

Day 1: 5:30 PM - Docking for the Night

By law, all houseboats in Alleppey must drop anchor and dock by 5:30 PM to allow the fishermen to cast their nighttime nets.

We typically dock near a quiet village or a scenic stretch of the lake. Once docked, you can ask the crew to arrange a small wooden canoe ride (extra cost) to explore the extremely narrow canals the houseboat cannot enter, or you can take a walk along the village paths.

Day 1: 8:00 PM - Dinner under the Stars

Dinner is a cozy, intimate affair. Depending on your preferences discussed with the chef earlier, this could feature Chapati/Roti, Chicken Curry, Dal, or freshly caught Tiger Prawns/Crab (if requested in advance).

After dinner, relax on the deck under a blanket of stars. Away from city lights, the sky is breathtaking. (If you booked a Premium or Luxury boat, your AC will be turned on so you can retire to a cool, comfortable bedroom whenever you are ready).

Day 2: 7:30 AM - Morning Mist and Breakfast

Wake up early! The backwaters are arguably at their most beautiful at sunrise. A soft mist often rolls over the water, and the birdlife is incredibly active.

Your chef will serve a hot breakfast. The most popular choice is the traditional Kerala breakfast: Appam with Vegetable/Non-Veg Stew, or Puttu with Kadala Curry, alongside fresh fruit and strong coffee.

Day 2: 8:00 AM - The Return Cruise

The engines start up again for your final hour on the water. This is a gentle, peaceful cruise back toward Alleppey town, allowing you to soak in the last views of the backwaters.

Day 2: 9:00 AM - Check-Out

You arrive back at the Finishing Point. The crew will help you with your luggage as you disembark, deeply relaxed and carrying memories that will last a lifetime.
